Kazak Kilim. Caucasus. Circa 1900. 270 X 107 Cm
The pattern as a form of visual writing.
A highly expressive Caucasian kilim with Kazakh motifs. This piece features a composition that is very characteristic of ancient weaves from the South Caucasus, specifically Azerbaijan.
The thematic scope of its motifs revolves around protection, strength, and fertility.
The piece is highly graphic and decorative. Its design is instantly recognizable.
Organized into successive horizontal bands, this staggered repetition creates a rhythmic pattern along the longitudinal axis.
The most prominent motifs depict mirrored ram’s horns. These symbolize strength and protection. Particularly in the Caucasus, they represent dragons.
At the center of each of these large motifs are diamond-shaped figures that are actually motifs associated with protection—the “eye” against the evil eye.
At each end, triangular motifs form protective barriers and create a visual rhythm.
Masterfully hand-woven wool-on-wool. Precision, finesse, regularity, and suppleness.
Exclusively plant-based dyes in perfect harmony.
Circa 1900 or earlier
Perfect, flawless condition.
