Karabakh Carpet. Armenia. Circa 1880. 202 X 111 Cm
Those who follow us or others who consult some of our publications on a more occasional basis know how much attention we pay to the description of each piece.
I've just positioned this Karabakh rug right in front of me and it's with great humility and deep emotion that I'm about to describe it. It's a complicated exercise, because looking at it, you'd almost forget yourself!
God, the colors!
I'm like a child in front of a confectioner's window. It's amazing. This perfect harmony, this balance in the ultra-graphic composition, these interlocking motifs subtly organized all over the surface!
I notice the deliberate absence of a central field. What's the point?
I used the term "graphic". I'm not sure it existed in the late 19th century!
But it's beautiful. By the way, when I showed it to a friend of mine, a lover of fine things and a professor at the University of Fine Arts, he remarked: "I'm not sure that 10% of my students could establish and build such a talented harmony of hues! "
That's excellence!
A marvel? Certainly.
Of course, it's woven and knotted wool on wool.
Of course, the velvet is short. It's an ancient Caucasian.
Of course, vegetable dyes exclusively.
In near-miraculous condition, some very slight old restorations.
