Exceptional reliquary frame with relics from the Passion of Christ and the Holy Places - Flanders, late 19th century

Rare and remarkable carved and openworked wooden reliquary frame of great craftsmanship, bringing together ten major relics related to the Passion of Christ, the Holy Places and several essential figures of Christian tradition.
The set is surmounted by the monogram IHS, symbol of the Holy Name of Jesus, and adorned in its lower part with a covenant shield of the Goethals and Malfait families, attesting to a prestigious family provenance.

Description

In the center is a delicate carved ivory plaque depicting the suffering Christ, crowned with thorns, in a representation imbued with piety and finesse.

The ten sealed thecas contain the following relics:

- Ex Ossibus S. Florae V.M. - bone of Saint Flora of Cordoba, virgin and martyr;
- Ex Sepulcro B.M.V. - from the tomb of the Blessed Virgin Mary;
- Mont. Tab. - of Mount Tabor;
- Domus Lauretana - of the Holy House of Loreto;
- Praesep. D.N.J. - of the Crib of Our Lord Jesus Christ;
- Sepulc. D.N.J. - of the Holy Sepulchre of Christ;
- Column. Flagel. - of the Column of Flagellation;
- SS. Crucis D.N. - of the True Cross of Our Lord;
- Mont. Calv. - of Mount Calvary;
- Ex Praecord. S. Ludovic R. - from the heart of Saint Louis IX, King of France.

This composition is an exceptional testimony to late 19th-century Catholic devotion, combining contact relics from the main shrines of Christ's life with relics of particularly venerated saints. Through its symbolic richness, artistic quality and state of preservation, this reliquary represents a first-rate piece for collectors of sacred art, religious institutions or lovers of antique reliquaries.
