Monastic Patience Work - 1850-1900 - Bone Altar Model - Unique Piece
Large carved bone altar model - monastic patience work, 19th century
Imposing unique model representing a church altar made entirely of carved bone, with remarkable finesse of execution.
Description
The set features a high altar complete with central tabernacle, summit cross, tiers, candelabras, liturgical lecterns, sacred vessels and altar fence. The rich, openwork architectural decoration is in keeping with a neo-Gothic vocabulary, with a multitude of miniaturized details executed by hand.
This type of work, known as "ouvrage de patience", is generally attributed to 19th-century monastic workshops or craftsmen, often in the Alpine regions (Tyrol, Bavaria, Switzerland) or Central Europe. The quality and complexity of this piece place it well above current production.
Dimensions: W 46 cm - H 45 cm
Material: carved bone (probably bovine bone)
Era: 19th century
Condition:
good overall condition given the extreme fragility, with some minor chips and wear.
Rare and unique piece, with strong decorative presence, ideal for religious art collection or cabinet of curiosities.
