"Gentleman's Suit In Silk Droguet - France Circa 1780"
Circa 1780, France. A French gentleman's day coat in silk drugget dating from the Louis XVI period. The coat has a relaxed cut, a small turned-up collar, elbow-length sleeves, and a pleated, full train. The fabric is a delightful drugget, a figured silk with fine bluish scalloped stripes, scattered with small flowers on a cream background. The coat is complete with its twenty-six covered buttons in the same fabric, which adorn the cuffs, flap pockets, back, and front, with only three true buttonholes, the others serving as facings. The lining is of cream taffeta and ecru linen (stains and some fragility of the silk under the armpits). Note a 4 mm stain near the collar, but no holes. The silk is very durable, and the coat has no major structural flaws. It is in very good condition, both in terms of color and preservation. Dimensions: Equivalent to a men's size 48. Length 106 cm, shoulders 34 cm, chest 100 cm, waist 92 cm, sleeves 60 cm.
