A Sarong In Batik, Printed By Wax Removal - Java, Indonesia Or Malaysia, C. 1880-1920

Circa 1880-1920 Java - Indonesia or Malaysia. Precious batik sarong, printed on Indian cotton batiste, very fine cotton printed using the batik technique and originating from Java in Indonesia or Malaysia, dating from the late 19th century. This is a wax-resist printing technique, allowing for the creation of an exceptionally fine design through the removal of dye. Natural vegetable dyes, probably cochineal red and indigo blue, were used. The design features the classic layout of a sarong, with a triangular border and a solid field of geometric motifs. Note the imperfections of the hand and the fine cracks and color blemishes that are typical of wax-resist batik printing. There are no flaws apart from a few indigo stains along the border, applied at the time by the dyer. No damage. Personally, I had never seen such miniature fineness in batik printing. Excellent condition in terms of color and preservation. Rare piece. Dimensions: 243 cm x 105 cm
