Silk Bourrette Quilt - Provence, Late 18th Century
Late 18th, early 19th century
Alpes-de-Haute-Provence
A rustic and charming Provençal quilt from the southern Alps, quilted with fuchsia- and violet-striped Bourrette silk dating from the 18th century. Probably a footcover. Assembled at a later date, before 1830. First Empire-style lining in cotton printed with white polka dots on a greenish “caca d’oie” background. A piece from my personal collection, acquired in Forcalquier in the 1980s. Slight signs of age, particularly at the central fold, with a few period repairs, but no holes or fabric that’s “coming apart”! In its original condition and suitable for decorative use without any unpleasant surprises. In excellent structural and overall condition.
Dimensions: 121 cm x 110 cm.
