Pagoda On An Island, Yuzen Birodo Embroidery, Japan, Meiji Era (1868-1912).
Japanese embroidery made of Yuzen-Birodo velvet depicting a sacred pagoda on a small island off the coast. On the mainland, beyond the forest, several buildings can be seen, and in the background, a sailboat is sailing on the sea.
Japan, Meiji era (1868-1912).
Dimensions with frame: 62.5 x 62.5 cm. Dimensions without frame: 52.5 x 52.5 cm.
The Yuzen-Birodo technique was invented by Nishimura Sozaemon of Kyoto in 1868. The velvet was woven by passing threads through fine metal wires parallel to the weft, then cut to form the pile. The precise cutting allowed for a three-dimensional effect.
Good condition, slight signs of wear. Framed under glass.
