18th Century Chinese Embroidered Wool Panel – Mythical Animals And Archaic Frieze

An exceptional Chinese wool embroidered panel, dating to the 18th century, likely created as a temple or domestic decorative hanging. The panel is worked in delicate shades of blue, white, and black wool threads on a woven ground, forming an array of mythical beasts, butterflies, and auspicious motifs.

The textile is bordered with indigo-dyed fabric and features a striking upper frieze resembling stylized archaic script, possibly inspired by ancient Chinese seal characters, lending the piece an esoteric and auspicious symbolism.

Measuring 108 cm x 70 cm, this panel displays fine craftsmanship and artistry characteristic of early Qing period embroidery. The reverse shows hand-stitched work and some wear consistent with its age and use.

A rare survival from 18th-century China, this textile is both a work of art and a fascinating cultural artifact.
