Satsuma Plate, Japan, Meiji Period (1868-1912).

Hand-painted and gilded Satsuma ceramic dish. The scene depicts two figures, an adult and a child. The head of one of the men is surrounded by a halo, suggesting he may be a Buddhist arhat/rakan.

A landscape with mountains in the background surrounds the figures, and a decorative, ornamental rim adorns the dish.
