Ceramic (stoneware) dish with hand-painted decoration. It probably represents Bodhidharma (Japanese: Bodai Daruma), the legendary patriarch of Zen Buddhism who lived in the 5th and 6th centuries CE. As a wandering monk, Bodhidharma left his native India for China, where he met, among other things, Emperor Wu Di in the city of Nanjing, and became famous for his nine-year meditation in a cave near Shaolin in Henan province.
