Patola Double Ikat Or Transparent Silk Shawl - India For The Indonesian Market, Late 18th Century
Late 18th or early 19th century, India, for the Indonesian market. Patola Double Ikat, or very fine sheer silk shawl with a dominant red hue, made in India for the Indonesian market. The Ikat technique is similar to the Lyonnais technique of "Chiné à la Branche" or warp-dyed printing. In this case, this Patola is double Ikat because it involves both the warp and weft threads, which are dyed before weaving. It features a repetition of geometric motifs in the center: stylized flowers, circles, and striped borders. At each end are geometric friezes with a pyramidal design typical of Indonesian art. The weave is very supple, airy, and sheer, like the most precious Patolas of the 18th century. Note four or five repairs with red thread and some minor reinforcements. No stains. It is not perfect but complete with its original selvedges and fringes. Good overall condition of preservation and colour. Dimensions: 436 cm x 100 cm.
