Orientalist Dress Or Djellaba In Lamé By Madame Babani - Paris France Circa 1915-1920

Artist: Babani
Circa 1915-1920
France Paris
Orientalist dress or djellaba in lamé inspired by the ikat design of Adras silks from Bukhara in Uzbekistan. Minimalist bag cut, sleeveless, loose and straight, with edges piped in silver lamé. The satin-ground lamé weave made on a Jacquard loom probably comes from the Bianchini-Férier factory in Lyon. Woven label indicating Babani 98 bd Haussmann Paris. The Maison Babani, located on bd Haussmann in Paris, was famous for its exotic productions in the style of Mariano Fortuny or Gallenga, which it sold in its boutique. No lining. No defects to note apart from a discreet rust stain at the bottom. Beautiful condition.
Dimensions: Equivalent to size 38-39 France. Height 124 cm, shoulders 39 cm, chest 93 cm, waist 90 cm, hips 96 cm.
Vitaldi Babani opened his Maison de textiles et de couture in 1894 on Boulevard Haussmann in Paris. Babani, along with Maria Monacci Gallenga, was one of the followers of the style inaugurated by Mariano Fortuny at the beginning of the century. Madame Babani is considered the true creator, the soul of this house, although the direction was ensured by her husband, then her son. She offered kimonos, Liberty fabrics and Fortuny's creations. She soon added her own creations, inspired by the medieval, Renaissance and oriental styles, with a pronounced taste for bright colors and lamé fabrics. The House closed around 1930.
