Stole Known As Assuit, Made Of Cotton Voile And Silver-plated Metal Strips - Egypt, Circa 1930-1940

Circa 1930-1940, Egypt, for export to France. A black and silver stole from the Art Deco period, known as an Assuit Shawl, made in Egypt for Western fashion during the 1920s-1940s. This Egyptomania trend reached Europe following the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in Egypt in 1922. The design is geometric, featuring large, interlocking diamonds. It is handcrafted using a cotton net entirely pierced with silver-plated metal strips to create the design. In France, couturiers such as Paul Poiret, Babani, and Gallenga created Art Deco dresses with this precious material, which has an impeccable, fluid drape. The shawl is flawless; the fabric is surprisingly strong to support the weight of the metal. It is in beautiful condition, retaining its color and preservation. Easily wearable for a sophisticated evening. Dimensions: 220 cm x 55 cm.
