Silk Moiré Tablecloth Embroidered With Silver Thread And Cannetille - France, Early 18th Century
Early 18th century
France
Exquisite tablecloth in coral-orange silk moiré, embellished with openwork embroidery and dating from the Baroque period. The design is classical and symmetrical, featuring a large central medallion with a basket of flowers filled with pomegranates and cornucopias, and four spandrels with flowering pineapples. The border features an appliqué, undulating design of plant motifs and a silver braid. Period appliqué embroidery in Beauvais stitch, using polychrome silk in a gradient of colors, enhanced with silver threads and cannetille. Some slight discoloration and subtle halos in the silk. No major defects; the moiré silk background remains very sturdy. Good condition considering its age.
