A quilted bed quilt in Toile de Nantes, Manufacture Favre-Petitpierre & Cie, named Socrates and Hippocrates circa 1825, in relation to the taste for antique scenes of the early 19th century. Cotton canvas printed with a copper plate in madder red after contemporary paintings of the time, Jacques Louis David (1748-1825), the death of Socrates and Anne Louis Girodet (1767-1824), Hippocrates refusing the gifts of Artaxerxes. The composition in green boxes is by the famous designer Samuel Cholet who discreetly signed his canvas (see last photo). The quality of the copper plate engraving, like a soft intaglio, as well as the shades of red preserved from sun damage, constitute here an exemplary testimony to the renown of Toiles de Nantes. The diamond-quilted reverse side features an ecru cotton canvas with traces of stencils, evidence of their original condition. Clean set, without holes or stains. Excellent condition of conservation. The quilt top 290 cm by 130 cm Seven other identical pieces of this bed set will be for sale separately.
