A Palampore Indian Chintz Hanging - Coromandel Coast For The East India Company, Circa 1750
Circa 1750, India for Export. Rare painted cotton palampore from India - Coromandel Coast, for the East India Companies circa 1730-1750. Very fine mordanted cotton canvas, dyed with vegetable dyes (including indigo and madder) and hand-painted. The decoration features a profusion of Indian flowers in a paradise garden with baroque interlacing patterns, reminiscent of the "Bizarre" style of Lyon. The border is framed by floral motifs with an architectural design on three sides, highlighted by thin ochre borders added later and dating from the same period. The mounting comprises several pieces of the same palampore, probably reassembled in the early 19th century. Used as a curtain in the 19th century, the lining is blue cotton chintz. No holes or stains, and only very slight yellowish discoloration. Beautiful overall condition in terms of color and preservation. An exceptional piece. Dimensions: 325 cm x 204 cm
