Quilted Skirt Or "cotillon Marseillais" Made Of Aubergine-colored Indian Calico With A "buti" Pattern—19th-century Provence

A flat-quilted skirt, or Provençal cotillon, in mint condition, from the Jourdan Barry collection in Marseille and dating from the 1850s. Very fine cotton printed with a five-color Indian “Buti” pattern on an aubergine-brown background, using the reserve printing technique.
Very fine running-stitch quilting consisting of small diamonds and finished with a series of fourteen puffed sections at the hem to enhance the skirt’s wave-like drape. Lined with miniature-printed cotton fabrics from the same period. Note a 5-cm square cut out from one corner, likely corresponding to an inventory sample from the collection. A beautiful piece of Provençal ethnology! No flaws—this skirt has never seen the light of day. Excellent condition in terms of color and preservation.
