An Embroidered Crepe De Chine Shawl - Asia, For Export, Circa 1900
Circa 1900
Asia, for export to Europe
A cream-colored crepe de chine shawl embroidered with a scroll of plum blossoms and peonies, dating from the late 19th century, early 20th century. Asian craftsmanship produced for export to Europe. Features a cape-style shawl tied with cream-colored tasseled cords at the front, with long shawl panels draped over the arms and front. The back is short and slit to rest over a Belle Époque-style dress. The edges are finished with hand-made fringes of matching cream silk cords. In contrast, the polychrome embroidery is machine-made, which was avant-garde for the time! The shawl collar, folded over the front, ends in a faux hood with a pompom at the back, in the style of Oriental burnouses. Note: there are four to five needle holes in the crêpe de Chine (maximum 0.3 cm each) and two or three tiny discolored spots that do not compromise the durability of this “Visite.” These are the only flaws to note. Overall, the color and condition are excellent.
Dimensions: Equivalent to French size 40–42. Shoulder width 46 cm, chest 95 cm, front length 120 cm, back length 65 cm, hem width 205 cm.
