Mughal Tapestry With The Tree Of Life - Gujarat, India, Early 20th Century
Early 20th century, India, Gujarat. Mughal-style tapestry with a finely chain-stitched Tree of Life design on ecru cotton, dating from the early 20th century. The work of Gujarat embroiderers in India is identical to that of previous centuries. The Tree of Life design sits on a tortoiseshell mound surmounted by large leafy and flowering stems and framed by two cypress trees. The border is decorated with Indian floral scrolls. The lining is made of a piece of striped Masrur sari in silk and cotton dating from the same period. The tapestry is hemmed around the edges with green Masrur silk (the silk is worn). There are some minor soilings and two repairs to the ecru cotton (see the last two photos), the only flaws to note. The colors are beautiful and vibrant. Overall, it is in good condition. Dimensions: 108 cm x 74 cm.
