An Indigo Woven Fabric With A Chevron Pattern - Germany (?) 17th Or 18th Century
17th or 18th century, Germany (?) Thick, early period figured cotton fabric in indigo and white, woven in Germany (?) in the 17th or 18th centuries. The weave is complex and reversible, featuring herringbone and geometric designs of interlocking diamonds. The geometric effects are achieved by alternating plain and twill ground areas. Possibly a tablecloth, the fabric sewn in three full widths of 65 cm. The weave, alternating white cotton threads with indigo or woad-dyed cotton threads, offers a beautiful range of blues, amplified by the variations in the weave! This type of fabric was also found in Catalonia, in the Valespire Valley near Perpignan, where it was known as Catalan fabric. Note three or four tiny holes, visible only when held up to the light, and a discreet yellowish stain. Overall, the fabric is in good condition, both in terms of color and preservation, considering its age. Very rare piece. Dimensions: 200 cm x 109 cm.
