A Striped Silk Futah Shawl From Tunis, Circa 1960
Circa 1960, Tunisia. A small Futah, a square shawl used as a headscarf, headscarf, or to tie around the waist in the Tunisian tradition, dating from the 1960s. This pure silk square shawl is in its original, like-new condition and comes in its original, clearly labeled paper packaging in Arabic and French (some tears in the paper). The silk twill has a turquoise blue background with yellow, black, red, and white stripes. Woven on a handloom, this small Futah still has its uncut fringe. The tradition of silk weaving in Tunis is renowned and centuries old. It has supplied a large part of the Mediterranean basin since the 16th century. Here, the silk has retained its original, stiff finish. No flaws. Excellent color and condition. Dimensions: 83 cm x 80 cm with 6 cm fringe.
