Embroidered Velvet Smoking Cap, Branded In Algiers, Circa 1900
Circa 1890-1910, France. A men's Orientalist smoking cap, typical of 19th-century loungewear and banyan trees, notably those associated with Sainte-Beuve. This particular cap, labeled Léon Schweitzer, 24 Rue Bab-Azoun, Algiers, is made of black cut silk velvet and dates from the Belle Époque. It features exquisite mauve and violet silk thread embroidery forming garlands around the edge and crown, accented with a large black passementerie button. The interior is fully padded and quilted with black silk pongee. There are very slight scuffs to the lining around the edge, the only flaw to note. The cap is in excellent condition, both in color and overall. A piece for collectors or for everyday wear. Dimensions: Diameter 17 cm, Crown height 11 cm, Head circumference 52 cm.
