# The caftan represents femininity in its purest form.
Originally, the caftan was of Persian origin; it then spread under the Ottoman Empire (before the 14th century) and later to Russia (19th century, a Slavic garment originating in Bulgaria; today, Orthodox priests continue to wear wool-lined caftans with a black outer fabric), before being imported by the countries of the Ottoman Empire and the Middle East into Moorish Andalusia (beginning in 1492).
It was not until the 15th century that it was introduced to Andalusia through caravan trade around the Mediterranean.
In other words, the caftan has as many variations as there are countries it has passed through.
The caftan was originally intended for wealthy families and sultans, as the silks and embroidery were extremely expensive and a sign of wealth.
Over the years, however, it became more widely accessible, thanks in large part to the textile trade.
Today, the caftan is the quintessential formal attire for ceremonies (weddings, baptisms, religious holidays, etc.).
Fashion designers have made the original caftan more accessible by adapting it to the characteristics of our 21st-century society.
Yves Saint Laurent played a role in the redesign of the Moroccan caftan and in bringing it to the forefront.
