Koula Rug, 127 X 186 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool, Central Anatolia, Türkiye, Circa 1920-1930
A Koula prayer rug, originating from Koula in Central Anatolia, in very fine condition, circa 1920-1930.
If ancient pieces from Asia Minor have been preserved in such remarkable condition,
it is undoubtedly thanks to the quality of the wool or silk used and their dense weave,
but also because they were handled only by pious hands, just as pious were those who knotted them.
Two small towns in Anatolia, close to one another, have left us remarkable prayer rugs of unparalleled artistic quality: Koula and Ghiordes, whose inhabitants knotted pieces at home of a beauty that rivals the masterpieces of Persian workshops.
Our example features a niche of a solid cherry red, adorned with such a deliberately floral ornamental style that the lamp and its rays of light have taken the form of flowers.
Pink carnations, alternating with red and blue, compose the border motifs on the background. Cream, pink, and blue.
This rug, of great beauty and delicate design and color, is a true gem of Anatolian art from the first half of the 20th century.
The density of this piece is approximately 640,000 knots per square meter.
A very high-quality rug. Dimensions: width: 127 cm (50") x length: 186 cm (73").
This rug can be used as a decorative floor element, but given its great beauty, it can also be displayed as a wall hanging.
