Lampong Skirt Made Of Cotton Embroidered With Gold Thread—sumatra, Indonesia, Late 19th Century

Ceremonial skirt or portion of a skirt from the Lampong region of South Sumatra, which gave this type of garment its name, dating from the 1900s. Double-sided woven cotton fabric with warp-direction stripes. Colors are vegetable dyes in shades of madder red, indigo, yellow, and black. Entirely embroidered with golden curly threads and gold sequins (many sequins are missing). The skirt consists of two complete panels with selvedges, sewn together before embroidery was applied. The piece is very slightly discolored from exposure to light, giving it a beautiful patina. A few small loose threads, but no holes, stains, or major defects to note. Good overall condition in terms of color and preservation.
Dimensions: 112 cm x 115 cm, consisting of two sewn-together panels, each 55 cm wide.
