Prestigious Embroidered Organdy Tablecloth From Maison Louis Rouff - Paris, First Half Of The 20th Century
Artist: Louis Rouff
First half of the 20th century, France. Large, prestigious rectangular tablecloth in embroidered and scalloped organdy from Maison Louis Rouff, 4 Place Vendôme, Paris (attributed to). In the Art Nouveau style, this tablecloth with a central border is adorned with butterflies and four spandrels featuring leafy, sinuous stems laden with blooming flowers with pistils. The embroidery plays on the transparency of the white embroidered and openwork organdy and is very finely crafted. It was made in Bain-de-Bretagne in the Vosges region. The tablecloth has been cleaned and is in excellent condition, with no stains or holes. Dimensions: 350 cm x 165 cm. Louis Rouff is a century-old company that specialized in luxury lingerie, trousseaux, lace, embroidery, and prestigious textiles for decoration. It succeeded GMB, the Grande Maison du Blanc, founded during the Second Empire at 8 Rue Royale in Paris, in 1925. L. Rouf had branches in France, including in Cannes, Nice, Vichy, Vittel, and Contrexéville, and all its embroidery was produced in Bain in the Vosges region. Around 1928, when it moved to 136 Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Louis Rouff's children appear to have partnered with Maggy Anna de Wagner, who then adopted the name Maggy Rouff, a renowned haute couture house. Later located at 4 Place Vendôme, L. Rouff supplied, among others, the Ritz Hotel and the Baccarat and Christofle jewelry houses. Its headquarters were finally moved to 21 Rue d'Antibes in Cannes, where it ceased operations permanently in 1978.
