A French Chiné Brocatelle Wall Hanging – Aix-en-provence, Late 17th To Early 18th Century
Late 17th, early 18th centuries
France – Provence
A remarkable silk and linen Chiné brocatelle tapestry, originating from a private Hôtel particulier in Aix-en-Provence, situated on the Cours Mirabeau, and dating from the late Louis XIV period or the Regency period. Panel sewn from six original panels, edged with a linen-bougran ribbon fitted with brass rings for wall hanging. Brocatelle, silk warp, linen weft, featuring wide satin stripes with a branch motif, with white undulations on a cherry-red background. Alternating stripes with a stylised Baroque floral motif in golden yellow and ochre. Several very faint period micro-repairs in the brocatelle, which do not compromise the stability of this tapestry, miraculously preserved to the present day. Good condition of colour and preservation.
