Glazig Breton Vest Made Of Indigo-dyed Woolen Cloth With Embroidery - Quimper Region, Circa 1880–1900

Circa 1880–1900
Brittany

A Breton vest known as a “glazig” from the Quimper region, dating from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. A men’s work garment with a body made of indigo-dyed woolen cloth, fully quilted and re-embroidered.  This woolen cloth was repurposed from French military jackets dating from the 1870 war. Featuring finely pleated and gathered velvet ribbons at the collar and appliquéd on the front. Yellow and red silk embroidery in a striped pattern typical of Breton art. Four interior cotton pockets. Unlined, with a natural patina—including that of the velvet—reflecting the wear and tear typical of a work garment. No major defects. Good structural condition.

Dimensions: small men’s size. Shoulders 33 cm, chest 85 cm, height 50 cm.
