Medieval Glazed Earthenware Drinking Cup - 15th Century
A drinking cup intended for the consumption of water or wine.
The cup is made of terracotta, lightly glazed at the bottom, with a yellow slip.
It is designed to be held in the palm of the hand; a lateral grip, positioned beneath the thumb, helps to secure the hold and facilitates use.
This piece was likely discarded following a firing defect.
Such defective productions were generally thrown into waste dumps (tessonnières) located near the potter’s workshop.
Despite these firing defects, this cup remains a valuable document illustrating tableware from the medieval period.
