Tellem Neckrest – Mali, XI-XVI Century
Used in funerary rites, this wooden neckrest comes from the Tellem culture, which inhabited the cliffs of Bandiagara between the 11th and 16th centuries, before the arrival of the Dogon people.
It reflects the strong connection between the living and the ancestors and showcases the artisanal expertise of the Tellem, blending function, aesthetics, and spirituality.
Crafted from a single piece of wood, the form resembles Egyptian neckrests
A handle once extended from the central part of the object, now lost.
Some wear and tear is visible, due to usage and the passage of time.
