Conscript Axe - Folk Art - 19th Century
Axe composed of a painted wooden head and handle, decorated with brass appliques and burgundy velvet.
One side bears the inscription "1879 Commune de La Chapelle".
Historically, the term conscript refers to a young man entered in military registers and called up to perform compulsory service under state-organized conscription.
Beyond this definition, the conscript is part of a social reality and, in France, long embodied a rite of passage into adulthood.
Good condition, slight lack of paint and wear to the velvet.
