ANDRÉ COTTAVOZ (1922-2012) and his friends Jean Fusaro, Jacques Truphémus, Georges Adilon, and Philibert Charrin, graduates of the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, struggling through the difficult post-war years, came together to found a movement distinct from the "isms" such as Impressionism, Fauvism, and Cubism, rejecting all labels.
Sanzism was born and was supported by artists of the School of Paris who introduced the group to gallery owners and art lovers. For André Cottavoz, the material had to take shape; it became thick, kneaded with his fingers and palette knife as if he wanted to reach the heart of his paintings, from which a beautiful light emanates, enveloping his motifs.
For him, light is also a material, and there are no forms without it and without color.
