Pair Of Porcelain Oil Lamps, Boizot And Thomire.

Artist: Louis Simon Boizot, Pierre-philippe Thomire
A pair of oil lamps, usable as torches, in biscuit porcelain from the first half of the 19th century, after a model by Louis-Simon Boizot (1743-1809), representing the allegory of Philosophy as a young man writing and that of Study as a young woman reading, each seated on an antique-style oil lamp resting on a chased and gilded bronze base.
The models for The Philosopher and Study were designed and produced in biscuit porcelain at the Sèvres manufactory in 1780 by Louis-Simon Boizot, sculptor to the king, who succeeded Étienne Falconet as director of the Sèvres manufactory in 1773. These models, directly inspired by the Neoclassical revival, were very popular. They were produced in both porcelain biscuit and bronze, and were used to decorate numerous pieces of furniture such as candlesticks supported by antique lamps, andirons, or clocks (see H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, pp. 294 and 295).
A drawing attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire, held at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, shows an identical model of an antique lamp on the right side of a fireplace.
