A superb pair of Louis XVI-period chairs, made of molded and carved mahogany, attributed to Georges Jacob and formerly from the Château de Villiers-le-Bâcle, from the collection of Count Paul Biver.
The rectangular, openwork backs are framed by tapered, fluted posts.
The central panel features a carved motif depicting a quiver with five arrows surrounded by two bows, held in place by a knotted ribbon with two tassels.
The tapered, serrated, and fluted legs are connected to the base by blocks adorned with carved rosettes.
The seats are upholstered with petit point tapestry featuring a floral motif, edged with studded braid.
The inner crossbar of the seat on each chair bears the “VB” brand mark (for Villiers-le-Bâcle), complemented on the straps by the stenciled monogram “A.”
Attributed to Georges Jacob by Count Paul Biver, an art historian and collector of prestigious Louis XVI-era furniture.
This attribution has been confirmed by several experts.
This pair of chairs is in excellent condition, perfectly stable, and requires no reinforcement.
From the estate of Count Paul Biver (1886–1952), born on August 2, 1886, at the Château de Villiers-le-Bâcle, a family estate; he was a collector and art historian active in the first half of the 20th century.
His thesis on the history of the Château de Meudon, published in 1923, remains a standard reference to this day.
He also published a book titled *History of the Château de Bellevue*, which once belonged to Madame de Pompadour.
