Painter of Venice and the Orient of the Arabian Nights, Félix Ziem (1821-1911) was a nomadic, unclassifiable and eccentric artist.
This great traveler, friend of the Barbizon painters, admirer of Lorrain and Turner, occupies an original place in 19th century art. Nicknamed the "painter of Venice" by his friend Théophile Gautier, Ziem visited the city nearly twenty times between 1842 and 1897, and his notebooks were filled with notes and drawings about Venice. What first attracted Ziem to Venice was not so much the city before his eyes, but the one described by Romantic writers such as Châteaubriand and Musset, and painted by the great painters of past centuries.
He even had a floating studio installed to immortalize the best views.
Ziem was able to attract a wide clientele who loved to dream of Venice or Constantinople in front of his canvases. He began his long career in the shadow of Delacroix and ended it on the Butte Montmartre near the studio of the young Picasso.
After the successful retrospectives presented in Marseille, Martigues and Beaune, the Petit Palais is exhibiting around a hundred works from the Ziem donation (paintings, watercolors and drawings), which entered the museum in 1905.
Water and the sky occupy a predominant place in the luminous landscapes that made his reputation.
More unexpected, his travel notebooks, his sketches captured on location, his copies after the Italian and Dutch masters, his sketches that give free rein to the impulses of color reveal the secrets of the studio and tell another Ziem.
He is, it is worth noting, the first artist to enter the Louvre Museum during his lifetime.
