(Gold Medal at the Paris Salon) Martin-Ferrieres began his studies in literature and science. His scientific background proved invaluable later on, as his knowledge of chemistry enabled him to refine his painting techniques. It was during the 1920s that the artist began winning awards, such as the Silver Medal at the Paris Salon for *Le Christ* (Christ). Upon returning from a trip to Italy, Martin-Ferrieres held his first solo exhibition. After winning the Gold Medal for *Marche d’Assise* (Procession in Assisi), he attracted increasing critical attention, with critics agreeing on his talent. The year 1933 marked the beginning of travels across Southern Europe. His painting style—and especially his use of color—shifted depending on the country he was visiting, featuring a pinkish light in Greece or a highly vibrant palette in Spain. The war years interrupted his travels, as he joined the Resistance in the Dordogne region. He later resumed his travels throughout Europe, particularly in Italy—a land that served as a major source of inspiration for him. His success enabled him to fulfill various commissions, including a project that occupied nearly four years of his life: the creation of large-scale frescoes for the Church of Saint-Christophe de Javel in Paris. He was appointed an Officer and subsequently a Knight of the Legion of Honor. Through his canvases, Martin-Ferrieres demonstrated a profound interest in humanity and life itself. Everything he works on becomes an artistic element, even though he addresses very classic themes—portraits, landscapes, still lifes. A master colorist, Martin-Ferrières blends warm and cool colors into a harmonious, non-jarring whole.
