Alphonse Stengelin, born in Lyon in 1852 and died in Satigny in 1938, was a painter, engraver, and lithographer of the Lyon School. A student of Joseph Guichard at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, he developed a body of work devoted primarily to landscapes, rural scenes, and seascapes. He regularly visited the Netherlands, whose landscapes occupy an important place in his work.
His work is represented in several French and European public collections, notably at the Museums of Fine Arts in Lyon, Marseille, and Nantes; the Fabre Museum in Montpellier; as well as the Geneva Museum of Art and History and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, which holds several of the artist’s works.
Stengelin’s presence in these collections is particularly significant for situating this artist within the history of landscape painting of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
