Paul Borel, born in Lyon in 1828 and died in 1913, was a leading artist of the 19th-century Lyon School. A student of Louis Janmot, he is best known for his religious paintings and large-scale murals.
His work as a draftsman played a significant role in his body of work. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon holds a collection of several hundred drawings from his studio, including numerous preparatory studies.
