The work is signed “Joseph-Auguste Brunier” in the lower right corner and also bears a studio stamp in the lower left corner.
Joseph-Auguste Brunier, born in Chambéry in 1860 and died in Lyon in 1929, was a painter and draftsman of the Lyon School. A student of Michel Dumas at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, and later of Cabanel, Jules Lefebvre, and Gustave Boulanger in Paris, he exhibited in Lyon and Paris beginning in the 1880s. His body of work includes portraits, scenes of daily life, and religious subjects.
His graphic work is well represented in Lyon’s collections: the catalog of the Musées de la ville de Lyon lists several of Brunier’s drawings, including *Portrait of a Man* (1882), *The Reader* (1884), and *Head of a Young Girl* (1886).
The art market also confirms the interest in his drawings: a study of a woman’s arm measuring 32.5 × 25 cm was offered for €500–700, while a study of flowers measuring 24 × 31 cm was recently offered for €60–80.
