They had adopted a little cat named Hester. To keep their cat from feeling lonely, Andy adopted more cats untilhe had a colony of 25 cats, all of whom he named Sam. This gave him the idea topublish a children’s book in 1954 featuring 16 lithographs of his catsunder the title “25 Cats Named Sam and One Blue Pussy.” It was the resulta collaboration with his mother, who helped write the text. Thesewere the first lithographs by the master of Pop Art to explore the theme ofseries composed of bold colors with black outlines—a style that wouldlater reappear in his famous silkscreen prints.
