Chinese Laughing Boy Incense Holder, C.1880
Antique Chinese export earthenware figure of a Laughing Boy, late Qing dynasty, hand painted in famille rose enamels. The white glazed head contrasts with a vivid green floral robe, all set on a rocky base. Designed as an incense holder with five original apertures (crown, sleeves, back), with smoke emerging through the open mouth. Similar examples were also made as whistles. The Laughing Boy motif comes from Chinese folklore and Chan Buddhism, representing Budai, a monk revered as an incarnation of the future Buddha — a talisman of joy, prosperity, and protection.
