Moser Style Bohemian Cobalt Glass Decanter For The Qajar Market, C.1870-1890

A striking antique Bohemian cobalt glass decanter dating from the late nineteenth century and created for the luxury Qajar market. The vessel is decorated with finely painted enamel portrait medallions depicting Naser al-Din Shah Qajar and reflects the growing popularity of European luxury goods among royal and aristocratic patrons of the Middle East.

The rich twin-layer cobalt body is enhanced with raised gilding, hand-chased scrolling ornament and delicate polychrome enamel decoration. The quality of the portrait painting and the refinement of the gilded decoration demonstrate the high standards achieved by leading Bohemian glass workshops during this period.

The finest examples of this specialised production are associated with Ludwig Moser of Carlsbad (present-day Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic), whose workshop became renowned for supplying luxury commissions to royal courts and distinguished private clients.

An especially attractive feature is the survival of the original steeple-form stopper. Because these elongated pointed stoppers were highly vulnerable to accidental damage, complete examples are increasingly scarce on the market.

A superb display piece combining royal portraiture, luxury craftsmanship and strong decorative presence.
