"Daisy Makeig-jones Wedgwood Butterfly Lustre Bowl, Pattern Z4832, England, C.1915"
A fine and early example of Wedgwood’s Butterfly
Lustre bowl, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones around 1915. The exterior displays
a mother-of-pearl lustre glaze, hand-painted with richly gilded pastel
butterflies, each individually highlighted with underglaze polychrome painting.
The interior features a vivid orange lustre, mottled crimson ground, and a
central medallion with butterflies in an oriental-inspired arrangement. The
combination of these lustre colours and the detailed butterfly motifs, which
Makeig-Jones adapted from historic Wedgwood designs, makes each bowl unique.
Early production pieces, such as this, are especially sought after for their
artistic complexity.
The Butterfly Lustre range was produced from 1914 to 1929 and became the
second most desirable Wedgwood lustre pattern of its period, surpassed only by
the famous Dragon Lustre. This bowl is in excellent original condition, with no
damage or restoration, and the lustre and gilding remain crisp and fresh. Marked
Wedgwood, England, Z4832 to the base.
Condition: this bowl is in excellent original
condition, with no damage or restoration, and the lustre and gilding remain
crisp and fresh.
Reflections may appear in the
images — these are not flaws in the item, but rather visual effects caused by
the lustre glaze. Slight distortions or highlights are a natural result of its
iridescent surface.
