Object description :

"Pair Of Large Antique Eichwald Porcelain Figures, Signed Hampel, 1905"

Exceptional matched pair of large porcelain figures, made by Eichwald (later Royal Dux, Bohemia), early 20th century. The male figure features the rare relief inscription “1905 HAMPEL”—virtually unique for this factory, which usually only marked model numbers. This is clear, museum-level sculptor attribution.

Dimensions and Weight:

  • Male musician (Pan flute): H 43 cm, W 15 cm, D 13 cm, 1928g.

  • Female musician (mandolin): H 44.5 cm, W 18 cm, D 12 cm, 1942g.

Condition:

  • Male: tip of Pan flute chipped, minor chips to laurel wreath.

  • Female: end of mandolin handle chipped, left pinky finger missing, minor touched-up chip to base corner.
Otherwise, both pieces in excellent antique condition, with vibrant paintwork and exceptional detail.

About Alois Hampel:
Alois Hampel (1840–1912), chief sculptor at Eichwald from the late 1880s until about 1910, is regarded as the key artistic figure of the factory’s golden period. His models—especially signed and pre-WWI—represent the very best in quality and design. After 1914, the factory’s output became more commercial, with much less detail and finesse. Hampel is cited as a participant in major exhibitions in Vienna and Paris, further enhancing his reputation. Early, signed and dated porcelain works such as this pair are prized by collectors worldwide.

Iconography and Style:
The figures symbolize Music and Poetry—quintessential Art Nouveau themes. The male holds a Pan flute and wears a laurel wreath; the female carries a mandolin. Both are hand-painted with subtle colour gradations, lifelike faces, and crisp, classic drapery.

Marks and Rarity:
Both are signed “HAMPEL” and numbered (1325, 1326), with clear triangular Eichwald marks. The male is dated “1905”. Pairs of this size, period, and attribution rarely surface at auction (examples have sold for €2,000–3,500), and almost never with such full provenance.

A museum-level addition for any serious collection.
