Kannon Bosatsu, Kutani, Kogetsu, Japan, Meiji Period (1868-1912).
This hand-painted porcelain figurine depicts Kannon Bosatsu, or Guanyin, with a basket of fish (Yulan Guanyin). According to legend, the goddess took on the appearance of a beautiful fish merchant in order to teach the dharma to the inhabitants of a certain village and turn them away from a sinful life. The fish in the basket also symbolizes prosperity and abundance. Note the characteristic bulging white dots on the garments - this is a technique called moriage.
