Great Ottoman Saber, Atypic Shape
This spectacular saber is of Ottoman origin. According to some Eastern authors, it might have been a saber intended to be used against horses' legs, but other sources describe it as a cavalry saber. The shape of the blade shows a general resemblance to the so-called "Shotel" swords used in Abyssinia, but the blade here is larger and much more robust. It seems that this blade shape existed in the Ottoman tradition as early as the 16th century (or perhaps even earlier), and it is in fact a variant of the traditional Kilidj whose curve was accentuated. To be cautious, I would date the hilt of this weapon from the 18th century, but the blade is very likely older.
BLADE: It is double-edged, with a strong central ridge and two hollow sides on each face. On the outer side, 10 cm from the handle, there is an engraved swordsmith's punch mark that I haven’t been able to identify. The blade is naturally oxidized.
Blade length, measured in a straight line = 85 cm, width near the hilt = 4.7 cm thickness near the hilt = 4.8 mm
HILT : it is in one single piece, cross guard and grip.
The cross guard has 2 wide straight quillons and two oval ears.
The grip is curved like a crook.
The rarity of this weapon is obvious, it will be a centerpiece in a collection of oriental weapons.
