Léonard Boudin, Flying Table Stamped “transition.”

Artist: Léonard Boudin (1735-1804)
A superb folding table, known as a “salon table” or “chiffonnière,” with a writing surface, stamped “L.BOUDIN,” opening from the front and featuring rich floral inlay decoration on all sides.
The top, slightly scalloped and bordered by an elegant molded gilt-bronze frame, is adorned in the center with a large bouquet of blooming flowers tied with a ribbon.
The side panels delicately echo the inlaid floral bouquet motif.
The front features three drawers, framed by moldings and inlaid with scrollwork of roses and foliage. The lock plates are adorned with gilded bronze scrollwork.
The top drawer reveals a complete writing secret: a sliding, lift-up tray lined with leather, revealing an interior storage compartment. On the right side of the drawer is an original gilded metal writing set.
The piece rests on four curved legs characteristic of the Louis XV style, tapering elegantly toward the bottom and ending in gilded bronze feet, closed with acanthus leaves.
Marquetry featuring rosewood, satinwood, violetwood, amaranth, sycamore, and boxwood.

Stamped “L.BOUDIN” for Léonard Boudin, with the JME guild hallmark.

In very fine condition, with its buffed varnish restored.
All bronze elements are original, with their mercury gilding intact.

Transitional period, circa 1765–1770.

Léonard BOUDIN (1735–1804)
He received his master’s certificate on March 4, 1761, and established his workshop on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine in Paris. Famous for the great finesse of his floral and geometric marquetry, he became one of the most prominent cabinetmakers of the Transition period and the early Louis XVI style. His considerable success enabled him to build a thriving business as a cabinetmaker and dealer, placing orders with the greatest names of his time (such as Charles Topino).
His creations retain perfect elegance in their proportions and exemplary quality in their veneer work; they are now featured in the most prestigious public and private collections (the Louvre Museum, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, and the Victoria and Albert Museum).
