Sivas Kilim. Anatolia. Circa 1900. 230 X 103 Cm

A very beautiful specimen of a kilim from Sivas, in Central Anatolia, Turkey. The word “specimen” takes on its full meaning here: this piece offers a particularly remarkable example of a design built around a large cruciform shape, extended on either side by long rectangular extensions.

This piece combines great age, obvious authenticity, and a strong connection to the traditions of Sivas. But beyond these qualities, it reveals an almost universal and timeless significance. It also possesses, despite its age, a surprising modernity: one could almost view it as a design object, so graphic and decorative is its composition.

Its design unfolds in successive bands, alternating between broadly structured sections and passages punctuated by small motifs. It is a pleasure to linger over these details—in both form and color—before returning to the rhythm of the broad bands. The selection of hues creates a particularly harmonious whole, with a true sense of musicality.
The two broad indigo-blue bands seem almost liquid. Their intensity enhances the other, more subdued colors: the soft pinks and that beautiful turquoise. And, upon closer inspection, you discover small motifs here and there that punctuate the composition and enrich its visual interpretation.

As you can tell, I love this piece, especially for all the reasons I’ve just mentioned. It also reminds me of my very first kilim purchase. I was in my early twenties at the time and working as a tour guide in Cappadocia. There’s something quite moving for me about rediscovering that same fascination today in a piece like this.

Good overall condition. A few slight signs of wear that give it a beautiful patina.

Choosing an antique rug or textile is often a matter of serendipity.
If one of our pieces catches your eye, or if you’d like more information or photos, I’d be happy to discuss it with you.
