Bakhtiar Qadjar Rug, 137 X 203 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool From Iran In The 19th Century, Collection
Extraordinary antique Bakhtiar rug from the second half of the 19th century;
hand-knotted during the Qajar dynasty, this piece measures 137 cm wide by 203 cm long.
The rug is in very good condition for its age, both in terms of the pile and the edges.
It has very fresh colors, as well as an extraordinary design, rare for this type of rug.
By far the most beautiful Bakhtiar I have ever held in my hands.
Design, color, wool... the condition of this beautiful artifact reflects a level of craftsmanship of a quality now obsolete.
This rug originates from the Chahar Mahal (Shotour) region of Iran, slightly near Ahvaz (see map).
It is a Bakhtiar with a central medallion, featuring two large, wide pendants in the shape of halberds.
The medallion is nested within another stepped medallion, decorated with flowers on an ivory background.
These are called juxtaposed medallions. Four spandrels (corners of the field) and fine borders in incredible blues.
We are far from the usual square or rectangular structures that spread across the entire field.
The first medallion, with its cut-out shape, presents a large flower and large stylized leaves, set on a burgundy, floral field.
The field is composed of an incredible mille-fleurs pattern.
Stylized, laid out like a checkerboard, colorful and knotted with a very high degree of symmetry.
Note the floral work on the spandrels in an intense blue and the elaborate and complex border.
This type of Bakhtiar rug remains a so-called nomadic style; the change in wool color as well as the asymmetrical shape found on some models suggests that these rugs were produced at home rather than in workshops.
Our model, although showing slight overall wear, is nonetheless a sublime artifact of 19th-century Persian culture, under the Qajar dynasty.
The Qajar dynasty (Qājār, Qadjar, Qajar, Persian: قاجار) was a Turkmen dynasty that ruled Iran from 1786 to 1925.
This rug, in fact, is particularly refined in its decoration and presents a certain transition between The nomadic rug and the urban rug.
Bakhtiar rugs are very durable, knotted with high-quality wool from the mountains.
Our model will withstand the footsteps of an entire family for many years to come.
Despite their name, and unlike other types of rugs, Bakhtiar rugs are not knotted by members of the Bakhtiar tribe, but by a different, now settled, population.
The Chahar Mahal region produces Bakhtiar rugs, as well as the lesser-known Yalame rugs, which are more recent in production but have a very good reputation.
Short fringes at one end and long fringes at the other, selvedges in superb condition, glossy and clean pile.
A truly rare collector's rug.
This rug has been professionally and ecologically cleaned.
Dimensions: Width: 137 cm (54") x Length: 203 cm (80") For a thickness of 7 mm.
